Being Latinx there are so many obstacles in the way when we need to get mental health care, things like :
Legal status : If they immigrated to the U.S they have to deal with getting a visa or green card. They have to deal with limited access to certain things and they have to leave a lot of things behind and adapt to United States customs. Their legal status could make or break their access to services that they need.
No health insurance: The process of being an undocumented person means having to deal with not being able to get the proper medical care that you need because you are ineligible to have health insurance. Many people in the Latinx community struggle with this barrier because a lot of them can't wait to get approved for everything if they need help immediately.
Money: If they don't have insurance and they are economically challenged ,they won't be able to pay for all the care that they need and the prescriptions if any. If they are migrants, they probably are not getting paid as much and would not be able to afford it unless they did it illegally.
Fear: Most of the time, Latinx people fear authority and getting help because they are scared it would impact them negatively. Some people are simply afraid of what is to come and what could be so they would rather deal with it on their own.
Denial: Most Latinx people come from traditional families that are tied to their religious and traditional values. This impacts them heavily into denying that anything is actually wrong. They could be educated enough to know the signs of illness and know where they could be diagnosed but would simply turn to their own faith of being okay. Sometimes your biggest obstacle is yourself.
Lack of support: Some people may be exhibiting many signs and want help but they might not have any support. They are told to " suck it up" that those are not real problems. The support of family and friends is very essential in the process of receiving the help that you need. Without it you can deteriorate further.
Language barrier: Many Latinx people speak Spanish and that may be their only language. Being in the United States, although it is very diverse, most people and health professionals speak English and it can be very difficult for them to communicate and help if the patient and provider aren't able to understand each other.
Stigma: This stigma can come from old traditional values or societal perspectives. People soak up information and are impacted by their families to believe that they don't need help. Mental illness can be very dangerous and should be taken seriously and nor pushes aside.
